The use of the Pentagram, a five-pointed star in the modern day world is similar to the use of the cross by the Christians and Star of David by Jews. Whereas Christians use the pentagram to describe the five wounds of Jesus, or maybe the five senses or five joys of Mary, in European occultism, it is regarded as a magical symbol. In Wu Xing, it is believed the five sides are similar to the five basic elements of existence, which are: Fire (火 huǒ), Earth (土 tǔ), Metal (金 jīn), Water (水 shuǐ), and Wood (木 mù).

Is it a good idea to get back where you started from ? How wise is it to live tied in customs, traditions, all put under the name of a "value system" ? Some say, there isn't a future without returning to our basic values. I beg to differ, what about you?

I'd die to differ Crystal.
I'm a big big victim of this hypocrite value system. And the depressing part is, no matter how inspired I become, there is little I can do about it, sometimes not even little.

Value system as a concept is good as it helps us grow and stay grounded at the same time but as we go deeper into this system, we generally find that some values are completely worth upholding while some others are pure hogwash.

I would say, do what makes sense to you and leave the rest, that way everyone's happy.

Is it mandatory to keep coming back to your values to move forward in life ? Doesn't the whole customs, conventions, traditions system bind you somewhere?

No, the value system doesn't make sense. I agree with Serendipity. The value system has been defined by jobless hypocrites. Its not the customs that define us, but our thoughts.
So you don't necessarily have to go all the way back and live with the customs since, every action of ours would essentially stem from the values within us.

I beg to differ too and I don't really think that a value system binds us in any way...its just like a set of guidelines to go by and its not always necessary that u follow all of it. :) Its not as complicated as it seems.

It is but axiomatic that if our value system hinders our progress it would be wrong to stick on it just for the sake of keeping in touch with the minds of our predecessors.

I second serendipity here..I got myself entangled in all that value system..Im dying to get myself out from that!!!!!!!

I beg to differ too.
But sometimes I feel so hopeless, because I can't do anything to change it :/

Any good values must always be cherished and the baggage must be set aside!

As far as I can tell, there are more people who feel the same way that you do than the ones who don't.. which proves I too am one of them, feeling exactly the same!

Society's standards are damned. Everyone knows it, to be frank and honest. I feel one has to decide where to head. Towards doing their own thing or others'.

We can differ to a lot many things. We all want to change so many things that prevail in the society. But is there anybody who will listen to us?

Everything is relative - customs, tradition, values...everything.

And 'relatives' impose the rest. no?

I agree with you. :)

PS: On an irrelevant note, my daughter shares her name with you. :)

With time, each individual and families evolve their own value system. It is important, specially in times when one will find oneself in unfamiliar territories and need some guidance.Value system also establishes boundaries of what is important and what unimportant in life.Sometimes you will be appalled to see what we consider as "basic values" is completely lacking in other parts of the world and at that time one understands the importance and impact of " basic values".
You will understand someday :)

Being tied in restrictions is not where you started from. You were always a free soul,a free bird and will always be. :) so if you complete your life in a full circle, you are only going to embrace the free bird inside of you!

we need to grow up!!! and growing up means u have to let go of things that are trivial and i think some of the customs that prevail in our society needs to be replaced... but then i think if we abandon this value system, we'd be lost; completely, because one way or another this value system defines us.

Well, in one word. NO. It isnt a good idea. Future cannot always be associated with our basic values.period. :)
